Program Philosophy

The goal of this collaboration is to provide expectant and parenting teens with multi-level support at a single site. The Alameda County Office of Education and Oakland Unified School District provide academic, nursing, counseling, and vocational support services which will allow these teens to complete their high school education; to learn to become competent, caring parents; and to become successful, contributing members of society. Child, Family and Community Services, Inc. provides a child-centered learning lab environment where expectant teens and teen parents can practice their parenting skills with their own children and learn self-sufficiency.
Services
The program serves expectant and parenting students aged 13 to 18 who have not completed high school and who live within the Oakland school district.
The program's overall goals are to enable motivated students to complete their high school education, to learn to provide a safe and caring environment for their young children, to secure gainful employment, and ultimately become fully self-reliant.
Academic course work is designed to support either graduation or a return to the student's home high school.
The child care center, through its small groups, its high staff-to-student ratios, and its parenting skills lab, combines hands-on supervision experiences with specific instruction in proper child care and family support services.
Parenting classes emphasize a comprehensive approach including child development, child safety and nutrition.
Support groups and counseling are also provided by The Perinatal Council and other agencies.
Enrollment
Student referrals to the school may be made by parents, counselors, nurses, doctors, community agencies, and students themselves by calling (510) 536-6086. Further information is also available at (510) 760-3745 or (510) 670-7683.
